WORCESTER, Mass. - In full disclosure, Queensryche is my all-time favorite band. I have been a fan since 1988, back to the days when “Eyes of a Stranger" appeared nightly on MTVs Top 20 Video Countdown. Don't get me started on how awesome Scott Rockenfield's chain drum kit was... I first saw Queensryche live on July 27, 1991 during the Empire tour, in a building just across the street from where I would see them this night, at the Centrum (now known as the DCU Center). The second time on that same tour in November of 1991 was at the old Boston Garden. I probably watched my Operation: Livecrime VHS tape a hundred times after those shows. In between then and now, this would be my tenth-time seeing Queensryche live, three with Geoff Tate and seven with Todd LaTorre.
This tour was Queensryche promoting the latest studio album, Digital Noise Alliance.
Accompanying me to this show was my twelve-year-old son, he really wanted to go to a Queensryche show with me. I was happy to oblige with his request, for it was a proud moment to be able share the rock concert experience with him. Lately my son can be found in the basement practicing the bass and guitar intros to "Jet City Woman." He gets it, I must have done something right. Now he wanted to take in the magic of a Queensryche show with me. We've already been to see KISS and Iron Maiden together. Side note: The night that we that we went to Iron Maiden in 2022 was at the DCU Center in Worcester, the guys from Queensryche were sitting a several rows down in front of us. Queensryche was in the area, on tour with Judas Priest at that time.
Arena shows are fun, but smaller venues are more exciting, because some of the big bands we used to see in arenas, were a bit more up close and personal. The Palladium is a good sized, old theatre, a place where he/we would be to the stage and watch these guys play, up close. My son wore my original Queensryche concert shirt that I got in 1991. It fit him much better than it fits me now.
This tour set list was a nice mix of new music from the Todd LaTorre era, including a nice selection from the DNA album. The set included a nice assortment of Queensryche classics as well. The band did a great job in curating a balanced set list.
I had my photo pass in hand and was exciting to once again photograph Queensrcyhe. It was first three songs from the photo pit, songs were “Behind the Walls” from the new album and “Don’t Look Back” from LaTorre’s 2013 inaugural Queensryche album. And then it was to back to 1984 for “Child of Fire” from The Warning album.
It is always nice to take a glance around the room while the band plays and see the draw that Queensryche continues to bring out each time they come around. A room full of strangers who have something in common with each other, the appreciation of Queensryche.
A big thank you to the powers that be have allowed me to be fortunate to cover Queensryche shows the many times for NortheastRockReview.com each they have come around to the New England area. Queensryche was a big part of my life growing up as a teenager in the late 80s/early 90s, I am glad that I can be a small part of what they are still doing today by covering their shows. And most of all, I am glad I got to take my son to experience this band, just like I did when I was his age back in the day.
Check out my original show coverage at the bottom of this page, after the preview photos.
